Surrey, B.C. – Lightning clapped in the sky hours before the start of Saturday’s evening competition in Cloverdale, but the skies cleared and set the stage for electrifying performances to strike in the Stetson Bowl. A charge was in the air as the capacity crowd cheered riders to massive margins of victory not once, not twice, but three times in the opening go-round for Pool B at the 77th Cloverdale Rodeo.

The standout among standouts was Tristen Hutchen’s 91-point ride in the bull riding competition, which was a full four points clear of the next closest rider. The three-time national finalist was matched up with the two-time reigning Canadian bull of the year, Rogers Red Angus Chester, a bull that carried a perfect buck-off record coming into the competition. That all changed when Tristen became the first rider to ride Chester to the full eight seconds.

“The two-time reigning Canadian bull of the year has never been rode,” exclaimed rodeo announcer Brett Gardiner. “…until May 17th, 2025 in Cloverdale, British Columbia, Canada! This is a night you can tell your grandkids’ grandkids about.”

Earlier in the night, a stacked barrel racing field, including 2024 Cloverdale Rodeo champion Vanessa Leggett, took to the ring in the opening races for Pool B. The field was closely packed with times in the mid-16’s until two-time Canadian champion Pamela Morrison blitzed into the stadium as Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” pumped through the P.A. Her time of 15.49 vaulted her into first place and ended up winning her the round by nearly three-quarters of a second.

Other Winners on the Day

  • Sage Allen’s 86-point ride edged out Orin Larsen’s 85.5 to finish atop the field in the bareback competition.
  • Kole Ashbacher pulled away from the next closest competitor by four points to take first place in the saddle bronc.
